Description
Organic sterilized rye comes in 5 lb 10T Unicorn bags. Optional injection port.
We can also make custom weight bags from 1 to 6 lbs. Contact us for details.
Our organic sterilized rye grain spawn bag was designed by experienced mycologists to optimize your mushroom grow for maximum speed and size. Each grain spawn bag includes organic sterilized nutrient-fortified rye. These are packed in 10T Unicorn bags with a 0.2 micron filter pore size. This blocks airborne contaminants while providing even gas exchange.
Bags can be equipped with an optional injection port to facilitate spore colonization. We recommend about 1 lb of colonized grain spawn for every 3 lbs of manure-based substrate. Use about 5 to 10 CCs of injectable liquid culture per 5 lb grain spawn bag.
Rye Grain is Preferred for Mycology
Rye grain or rye berries are chosen by many mycologists as a preferred grain spawn for mushroom substrates. Rye has many nutrients the mycelium feeds from, it holds water well, and has small grains with a large surface area. The larger surface area allows for more mycelium inoculation points. A broad range of mushrooms and mycelium species grown abundantly using rye grain, and this is a great all-around grain spawn type.
This grain spawn is great for growing both medicinal and gourmet mushrooms.
Sterilization
Turnkey Myco grain spawn bags are sterilized using a commercial-grade autoclave. We verify sterilization using temperature sensors and biological readings.
Inoculation Process
To inoculate the grain bag, we recommend you clean your hands or use latex gloves to prevent contamination. Then, follow this process:
- Inject the grain spawn bag with 12 to 15 CCs of liquid culture or spores. If your bag has an injection port, this will be self-healing.
- Do not inject too much liquid spore culture into the bag, as the extra moisture can create oversaturation of liquid, which can pool, and can create an anaerobic environment. The lack of oxygen die to over saturation will make it more difficult for the mycelium to colonize on the grain surface.
- Store the colonized grain in a room at about 70-78° and out of direct sunlight, which will allow the mycelium to colonize the grain spawn.
- After about 3 to 4 weeks (depending on the mushroom species and potency of the spore culture), the grain will be ready to be mixed with substrate. Use about 9 to 10 lbs of substrate for each 5 lbs of grain. Store this mixture in a grow bin, and as the mushrooms grow, they will be ready for harvest according to their maturation date.
Note: A best practice is to wait about one week to use your grain spawn after it arrives, to ensure that the bags were not compromised and cross-contaminated during transport. If you need a replacement, or need to make a return, consult our Returns and Exchanges page. We will replace any product damaged during shipping.
Colonization
As your grain bag colonizes in a place at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, you should start to see mycelium growing on the grain. Mycelium is white, and grows outward from the injection point. When the mycelium has grown about three to four inches, without opening the bag, proceed to carefully break up the colonized grain and mix it with any uncolonized grain. This will help the mycelium spread to the rest of the grain and accelerate the colonization process.
When the bag is completely white with mycelium, the spawn is ready to use. This should be about three to four weeks for most mushroom species. You can then mix it with the substrate, as the mushrooms will grow from this colonized mixture.
Storage
Our grain bags should be stored at room temperature out of direct sunlight. You can store them for months at a time and use them as you need them. No refrigeration is necessary.
